Baby, it’s cold outside!

December 14, 2010

Our new house has a heat pump as its heating/cooling unit. It’s a little unusual to see one this far north, unless it’s part of a geothermal unit (ours is not) and, as we’ve discovered, there’s a good reason for that.

It’s got a tough time keeping our house warm, especially with the single-digit and sub-zero temperatures we’ve had this week (the wind chill was -24 yesterday morning). We tend to keep our house cooler than average as it is, to help save on utilities, but sometimes it’s just darn cold in here! The thermostat is programmable and set at 67 during the day and 65 at night. During his research, the hub learned it’s not a good idea to have a large swing in temperatures like you normally would with an electric or gas furnace. The heat pump can’t handle it.

So we bundle up in multiple layers and I’ve taken to baking something about every other day to help warm up the house. Sunday it was monster cookies. I think today it may be banana bread. Or Grandma’s molasses cookies. One of these days I’ll break out the big guns and do all my holiday baking – gingerbread men, frosted sugar cookies, almond poppyseed bread and peppermint bark (which I know doesn’t really require any baking, but it’s still tasty). That’ll definitely help keep the house warm and toasty.
